The Sober Six-Pack

The Six Pack of Peaks is a challenge started by SoCal Hiker to tackle the six highest mountain peaks in Southern California within a calendar year. Many hikers use the six-pack to train for climbing Mt. Whitney; others, like me, do it just for fun.

When I got sober last year, hiking was a big part of my recovery; having this challenge to look forward to, plan around, and ultimately, track my progress against (turns out I'm a WAY stronger hiker when I don't drink margaritas the night before) gave me some of the happiest, proudest, most rewarding days early in my sobriety.

This year, I'd love to share this exhilarating experience! I plan on starting with two training hikes - Mt. Lukens and Mt. Baden Powell - and then following with the official hikes in the order that SoCal Hiker suggestsMt. Wilson, Cucamonga Peak, Mt. Baldy (proper name, Mt. San Antonio), San Bernardino Peak, Mt. San Jacinto, and San Gorgonio Peak. Read more...

Mt. Wilson

This 14-mile trek has everything you could want from a hike, including a waterfall, flowing creek, challenging incline, and working toilets both in the parking lot and at the summit. The views from the top are pretty great, too - there's a reason there's an Observatory up here!
